I’m writing this review because truly knowledgeable, patient-centered doctors in the realm of benzodiazepine deprescribing are exceedingly rare and Dr. Soni Hiten is one of them. Before working w/Dr. Hiten, my experience within both primary care and mental health medicine was deeply troubling. I encountered abrupt med changes, overly rapid tapers, dismissal of my symptoms, and a consistent framing of my situation as behavioral rather than medical. I was treated as difficult rather than injured, as a liability rather than a patient in need of care. Administrative missteps/restrictive prescribing practices further compounded an already destabilizing experience. Dr. Hiten represented a complete departure from that approach. From our first interaction, he demonstrated clinical humility, technical understanding, and genuine respect for my lived experience. Rather than pushing me to move faster, he prioritized stabilizing and asked thoughtful, patient-centered questions to guide decision-making. symptoms emerged after a reduction, he responded with careful adjustment rather than rigidity an approach grounded in sound clinical judgment. He supports a slow, individualized, symptom-based taper to allow for precise and gradual changes. he has avoided unnecessary polypharmacy and recognizes BWD as a legitimate neurophysiological process. He takes health anxiety seriously without pathologizing it. Dr. Hiten has also been thorough in monitoring my overall health and reassessing relevant diagnoses to ensure nothing is overlooked. he treats me as a collaborative partner in my care rather than a passive recipient of it. Under his guidance, I have stabilized, my symptoms are improving. For the first time in this process, I feel genuinely safe and supported within the medical system. The benzodiazepine community urgently needs more clinicians like Dr. Hiten providers who are knowledgeable, patient-centered, willing to practice slowly and thoughtfully in a system that too often prioritizes speed over safety. His approach aligns with best-practice, Maudsley-style principles and actively challenges the stigma that many patients face. If you are tapering, struggling, or have felt dismissed by other providers, Dr. Hiten exemplifies the standard of care you deserve. He does not simply manage symptoms he restores trust and, ultimately, lives.
