For most of my adult life, I was a hot mess dealing with difficult-to-treat depression, anxiety, and, more worrisome, my suicidality, which has the highest incidence for completion in physicians like me. I was no different than so many other patients like me, experiencing frustrations with treatment failures and slowly losing hope. Thinking I would never get better as I became closer and closer to completing suicide. First, I failed multiple classes of typical antidepressants, including lithium, for one reason or another. Then my trial with deep TMS simply didn’t work for me. I saw one psychologist and psychiatrist after another as I slowly moved through an understaffed and overworked specialty. Finally, I was hospitalized at Sharp Mesa Vista for a series of ECT treatments, which worked well for about 4- 6 months. When practically all hope was lost, I reluctantly tried Spravato (an FDA-approved treatment for treatment-resistant depression). It worked well for my relief of suicidality and some depression. Still not myself, I was nevertheless content with better, but still hollow inside. Unfortunately, I was not happy with the facility where I was receiving treatments. Then I had the good fortune of transferring my treatment and care to Aloha Integrative Health in La Jolla. My first evaluation was conducted by Janet Revels, MSN, RN, PMHNP-BC, a board-certified psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner. She was the first mental health provider who took the time to delve into my psychiatric history. She strongly recommended a newer antidepressant, which apparently augments and complements the effects of Spravato. Honestly, I had my reservations, but I gave it a try. Within a week, I got my life back. I have never felt more alive, hopeful, and happy. As a physician and patient, I recommend Janet Revels without any reservations… Janet Revels is a mental health expert. She knew how to listen and understood me (and admittedly, I’m a difficult patient). In short, she genuinely cared for my well-being. Words can’t describe how indebted with gratitude I am (and my loved ones) to her for literally saving my life. Frankly, Aloha Integrated Health operates like a happy family, which is very rare in our current healthcare environment.
